Mirror has remained a coveted decorative tool since its inception. In addition to the practical use in daily life of reflecting our own image, mirror amplifies both natural and electric evening light. Placed strategically and symmetrically to balance asymmetrical doorways and windows, mirror enhances the interior’s architectural symmetry. Opposite windows or at the end of corridors mirror reveals its luminous versatility through providing an illusion of infinite space. These tools of reflecting exterior views and light and enhancing architectural forms and alignment were embraced by the Art Deco movement and explain mirror’s continued appeal.
Mirror can be shaped in various geometric forms, providing streamlined and symmetrical angularity or fluid movement to an interior, from curvilinear shaping to a starburst design. Mirror frames further define the decorative intent through both scale and finish. With inspired materials such as aerodynamic chrome and stainless steel to the more luxurious lacquer, inlaid wood or gold and silver leaf, a mirror frame can either impart modern sophistication or opulent theatricality.
Mirrored walls are marvellously impactful and can provide various decorative results through the use of either plane, coloured or antiqued mirror or verre églomisé. Antiqued mirror provides a hazy, cloudy finish emulating the natural aging of mirror whereas verre églomisé adorns through a means of decorating glass from the back with gold or metal leaf applied to engraved designs. It is through this variety of scale, decoration and finish along with the almost magical illusion of space and dazzling light reflection that mirror enhances an interior and elevates the finish of any room in one’s home.
